The 1st Pattern Jungle Jacket, or Tropical Combat Jacket (TCU) Type I, was a lightweight, OG-107 cotton poplin uniform used by U.S. forces in hot climates from 1963, featuring exposed front buttons, slanted bellows pockets with flaps, shoulder epaulets, waist adjustment tabs, button cuffs, and an internal gas flap for chemical protection, distinguishing it from later versions with covered buttons and ripstop fabric.

Material: 5.5 oz Cotton Poplin (OG-107 Olive Green).

Buttons: Exposed (not covered by a storm flap) on the front and pockets.

Pockets: Four large, slanted bellows pockets with flaps (two chest, two lower).

Shoulder Epaulets: Present on both shoulders.

Waist Adjustment: Side tabs with two buttons for cinching.

Cuffs: Buttoned cuffs.

Gas Flap: An internal flap with two buttons to seal the neck area.

Design Origin: Inspired by WWII paratrooper jumpsuits but adapted for ventilation and quick drying in tropical conditions.

Evolution:

  • 1st Pattern (1963): Exposed buttons, gas flap, epaulets, waist tabs, cotton poplin.

  • 2nd Pattern: Still poplin but switched to internal buttons.

  • 3rd Pattern: Introduced durable ripstop fabric, removed epaulets, waist tabs, and the gas flap, adding a back yoke.

Significance:
The 1st Pattern was the initial combat uniform designed for the Vietnam War's climate, prioritizing airflow and rapid drying, making it iconic for early U.S. involvement.
