441st Bombardment Squadron Patch (Uniform Removed) USAF Vietnam War B-52's

An original USAF 441st BOMB SQUADRON Patch partial embroidery on a red twill material with cut-edge and cheese cloth backing. Checked with a black light (no glow) early 1960's manufacture. Patch is nearly 4.25 inches top to bottom in the center. Stitch holes from service use. Patch is slightly dirty from age and use but is complete with no material damage. This design of patch was introduced when the B-52 entered service with the 441st B.S. at Mather AFB near Sacramento California, as part of the 320th BOMB WING. Squadron continued flying the B-52 a/c up to 1989 as part of SAC and operated in the Vietnam Conflict. Prior to 1963 the squadron operated B-47 a/c from March AFB Southern California.

History of the 441st Bombardment Squadron

  • World War II: The squadron was first activated in 1942 and flew B-26 Marauder medium bombers. It operated in the Mediterranean and European Theaters of Operations, earning two Distinguished Unit Citations and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for combat operations.

  • Post-WWII: After the war, the squadron was inactivated and then briefly reactivated in the reserve from 1947-1949.

  • Strategic Air Command: The squadron was reactivated in 1952 as a Strategic Air Command (SAC) bomber unit. It was equipped with B-47 Stratojets from 1953 to 1960 and later with B-52 Stratofortresses from 1963 until its inactivation in 1989.

  • Vietnam War: The squadron participated in Operation Arc Light and Operation Linebacker II missions over Indochina during the Vietnam War, rotating aircrews and aircraft to support the war effort.

  • Expeditionary Unit: In 2011, the squadron was converted to a provisional status as the 441st Air Expeditionary Squadron, to be activated as needed.
